Box Score
Michael Lau's last-minute interception in the end zone helped the Calgary Dinos secure a 24-21 win over the University of Regina Rams in Canada West action on Friday night at McMahon Stadium.
With the Rams trailing by five points with two and a half minutes remaining in the fourth, Regina quarterback
Marc Mueller engineered a drive that took his team from his own 35-yard line down to the Calgary 16. Mueller then tried to find
Brenden Owens for the major, but the pass was picked off by Lau deep in the end zone to snuff out the drive.
The Rams (1-1) were up 9-7 at halftime and extended their lead to five with a
Chris Bodnar field goal midway through the third quarter. Calgary (1-1) then took the lead for good with back-to-back majors, including a 43-yard touchdown reception by Richard Snyder and a game-breaking 76-yard punt return for a major by Nathan Coehoorn.
Regina brought the score to within two after an
Adrian Charles touchdown rush midway through the fourth, but an Aaron Ifield field goal pushed the Dinos lead back up to five. After the Lau interception, the Dinos conceded a safety to give the ball back to the Rams, but the eight seconds left on the clock weren't enough to get the Rams into field goal range.
Charles was the offensive catalyst for the Rams, rushing 21 times for 135 yards and scoring both of Regina's majors on one-yard touchdown runs. Mueller ended up completing 24 of his 40 passes for 323 yards and hooked up with Owens eight times for 117 yards.
Rory Copithorn registered career highs in both receptions (6) and receiving yards (85).
Calgary first-year quarterback Eric Dzwilewski was impressive in his first career start, going 13-for-20 for 259 yards and two touchdowns. Both of Dzwilewski's touchdown passes were to Richard Snyder, while Chris Dobko had five receptions for 115 yards. Running back Matt Walter had 77 rushing yards, while the fleet-footed Dzwilewski rushed seven times for 61 yards.
Matt Yausie had a game-high 12 total tackles for the Rams, while Tye Noble led the Dinos with 8.5 total tackles. Doctor Cassama, Josh Symons, Martin Kalonji, and Byron Roberts all had sacks for Calgary, while
Steve Famulak got to Dzwilewski once for Regina.
The Rams will host Saskatchewan (1-1) next Saturday at Mosaic Stadium, while Calgary will travel to Edmonton for a game against the Alberta Golden Bears (1-0).
