Adrian Charles ran for 193 yards and scored a pair of rushing touchdowns for the third consecutive game to lead the University of Regina Rams to a 41-6 win over the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday night at Thunderbird Stadium in Vancouver, B.C.
The win improves Regina's record to 3-1 as the Rams pull into first place in the Canada West standings pending Saturday's Calgary/Manitoba game.
Charles had a 12-yard touchdown scamper to score the game's first major midway through the first quarter, then added a 90-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter.
Marc Mueller completed 16 of his 27 passes for 186 yards, including a 39-yard touchdown pass to
Jason Price. Price had a game-high 82 receiving yards for the Rams, while
Mark McConkey led all players with five receptions.
Billy Greene was 20-for-35 and threw for 218 yards for UBC, but was picked off four times by Regina's defence. A quartet of Thunderbird receivers tied for the team lead with four receptions.
Defensively,
Daniel Knaus led the Rams with a game-high nine total tackles and registered one of the team's four interceptions.
Jamir Walker,
Bruce Anderson, and
Kirby Kezama also picked off Greene, bringing the team's Canada West-leading interception total to nine.
Justin Carpenter led UBC with 6.5 total tackles, while Serge Kaminsky, Mark Bailey, and Connor Flynn each recorded sacks on Mueller.
The loss drops UBC to 1-3 on the season. The Thunderbirds will be back in action at Calgary next Saturday.
The Rams will host Alberta (2-2) next Saturday at Mosaic Stadium.
NOTES: Charles' 90-yard run was the second longest in University of Regina history, trailing only Ronald Arnold's 97-yard rumble during the 2000 season ... Charles has 563 rushing yards through the first four games of the season, putting him on pace to become the program's first 1000-yard rusher ... Charles now has six rushing touchdowns on the season and needs three more to tie Neal Hughes' school single-season record set in 2003.
