The No. 1-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team led from start to finish in an 84-62 win over Winnipeg on Friday night in a Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Michelle Clark scored 14 points to lead the way for the Cougars, who improve their Canada West record to 14-0 with the victory.
Lindsay Ledingham (12 points),
Jennilea Coppola (11), and
Joanna Zalesiak (11) also broke into double figures and all 12 players that dressed for the Cougars scored at least two points.
Stephanie Kleysen and Amy Ogidan both led Winnipeg (8-7) with 14 points each, while Alyssa Grant chipped in with 12. Ogidan led all players with seven rebounds.
The Cougars led by seven after the first quarter, but three-pointers by Grant and Yael Kaplan on back-to-back possession brought Winnipeg to within one point early in the second. Regina countered with an 8-0 run of its own and added another eight straight points just before halftime and led by 12 at the break. Another 12-3 run by the home side pushed the lead over 20 at the midway point of the third quarter, and the Cougars were able to stretch their bench in the fourth and cruise to victory.
The Cougars were sharp from downtown, hitting nine of their 25 shots from three-point range. Winnipeg hit just three of its 18 three-point attempts, two of which were by Grant.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at the CKHS. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
NOTES: Dating back to the end of the 2010-11 season, the Cougars have now won 16 consecutive Canada West games ... the U of R's record for most consecutive Canada West games won is 18, set over the 2000-01 and 2001-02 campaigns ... Coppola's 11 points are a career high, breaking her old mark of eight set against Brandon on Oct. 29, 2010.
