Cougars defeat Huskies in four

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies in a rare Thursday match, winning in four sets at the Physical Activity Centre on the U of S campus in Saskatoon.

The Cougars opened the match with a 29-27 win in a tightly contested first set that featured 15 tie scores and six lead changes. The U of R had to deal with a Saskatchewan set point at 26-25, but won four of the next five points to win the set.

The second set also went to the Cougars by a two-point margin, as the U of R got four kills from Trisha Dobson and never trailed in a 25-23 win. Saskatchewan replied with a 25-20 win in the third, but the Cougars hit .324 in a fourth set which they won by a 25-19 score to clinch their fourth Canada West victory of the season.

Tori Glynn tied for the match lead and also tied her career high with 13 kills in the win, while Chelsea Ziolkowski chipped in with 12 kills and 11 digs for a double-double. Already ranked second in Canada West in assists per set, Meagan Lane added 45 assists to go along with nine digs and three aces. Michelle Sweeting and Desiree Ates both ended up with nine kills for the Cougars (4-15).

Saskatchewan's Candace Hueser tied Glynn with 13 kills, while Carmen Dubnick led all players with 17 digs in a losing effort.

The two teams will finish off the home-and-home on Saturday night at the CKHS. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
