Box Score
The University of Regina's women's volleyball team started out Saturday's match with an epic comeback win in the first set and went on to win in five over the Alberta Pandas in a Canada West match at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The first set looked to be all Alberta as the Pandas took a 16-6 lead into the technical timeout before three consecutive hitting errors gave the visitors a 19-6 advantage. But against all odds, the Cougars scored 19 of the set's final 23 points - including a 9-0 run with
Leah Shevkenek serving - and took an early lead with a 25-23 win.
The teams traded the next three sets, with Alberta scoring 25-15 and 25-16 wins in the second and fourth sets and the Cougars taking a 25-21 win in the third.
In the deciding set, the Cougars (4-9) took control with five straight points around the side switch and clinched their fourth victory of the Canada West schedule with a 15-9 win.
Shevkenek controlled a balanced offence that saw three different Cougars hit double figures in kills, led by a match-high 15 from
Desiree Ates. The fifth-year outside hitter also had 12 digs for a double-double and had kills on three of the match's final four points to help seal the win.
Michelle Sweeting added 14 kills and a team-high seven blocks, while
Tori Glynn ended up with 13 kills. Shevkenek also had a double-double with 43 assists and 16 digs, while
Chelsea Ziolkowski led all players and set a new career high with 18 digs.
Meg Casault led Alberta (6-7) with 14 kills and added 11 digs for a double-double. Jessie Niles played only three of the match's five sets but still led the Pandas with 15 digs, while Kacey Otto had 10 kills and Jessica Stroud had a match-high 10 blocks. Setter Mariah Walsh chipped in with 31 assists and 11 digs for Alberta.
The two teams will meet again on Sunday afternoon. First serve is scheduled for 1:00.
