Box Score

The University of Regina's men's basketball team made things interesting in the fourth quarter, but couldn't complete a significant comeback as the Winnipeg Wesmen took a 73-63 win in Canada West action on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Winnipeg led by as many as 22 points in the third quarter, but the Cougars finally put together a run as they tried to get back in the game. They went on an 8-0 run late in the third and early in the fourth, and a big 12-2 run in the fourth capped by a jumper from the top of the key by Travis Sylvestre brought the Cougars to within seven before the midpoint of the final period. But that would be as close as the Cougars could come, as Winnipeg's Steven Wesley had a three-point play on the next possession and the Wesmen led by at least eight points the rest of the way.

Wesley, the conference's second leading scorer with an average of 19.8 points per game, was 10-for-18 from the field and led all players with 25 points. He also had 10 rebounds to notch the game's lone double-double, helping the Wesmen improve to 8-5 on the season and move three games clear of Brandon and Calgary for fourth place in the Prairie Division.

Andrew Cunningham had 11 points, five assists, and five steals for the Wesmen, while Kurtis Sansregret hit two triples and finished with 10 points in 17 minutes off the bench. Jelane Pryce led all players with 12 rebounds while chipping in offensively with seven points.

Brandon Tull led Regina (3-10) with 17 points, doing much of his damage from the free throw line where he hit eight of his nine attempts. Jeremy Zver had 12 points for the Cougars, while Sylvestre ended up with 10 and Brendan Hebert scored eight to go along with seven assists. Will Tallman led the Cougars with nine rebounds.

The two teams will be back in action on Saturday night at the CKHS following the women's game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00.
