The University of Regina's women's volleyball team hosts No. 6-ranked Manitoba this Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport in a battle of two teams that have yet to lose this month.
Coming off of two big road wins over Saskatchewan, the Cougars sit in seventh place in Canada West with six matches left in the conference schedule including this weekend. Technically, Regina and Saskatchewan are tied for seventh place in the conference standings with identical 7-9 records, but the Cougars currently hold the tiebreaker with a superior sets won/sets lost differential.
Michelle Sweeting had a huge weekend for the U of R last weekend, collecting 30 kills while hitting at a blistering .553 clip over the two matches. She also led the team in blocks (10) and service aces (4), while
Desiree Ates added 26 kills and
Leah Shevkenek averaged 10.71 assists per set while controlling a U of R offence that hit .295 for the weekend.
The Cougars now have a number of players near the top of the conference in several statistical categories, including Ates with a Canada West-leading 241 kills and Shevkenek's total of 608 assists which ranks second in the conference. The Cougars have two players ranked in Canada West's top ten in hitting percentage, as Sweeting is No. 4 (.306) and
Molly Wade-Cummings is No. 8 (.277).
As good as the Cougars have been over the last two weekends, they'll have their hands full with a Manitoba team that's also won four in a row and has been ranked as high as No. 4 in the CIS this season. The Bisons (10-6) have collected two wins each over Calgary and Mount Royal over the past two weekends and enter Friday's match tied with UBC Okanagan for fourth place in the conference standings.
Third-year setter Brittany Habing leads Canada West in assists (652) and assists per set (10.87) while leading a Manitoba offence that ranks fourth in the conference in hitting percentage. Rachel Cockrell and Taylor Pischke are Habing's main options on the outside, while Crystal Mulder and Jordana Milne also have over 100 kills this season. Libero Caleigh Dobie ranks second in the conference with an average of 3.88 digs per set.
Both the Cougars and Manitoba finish off the Canada West schedule against the same two opponents. The Cougars host Thompson Rivers next weekend before travelling to Kelowna, B.C. to face UBC Okanagan, while Manitoba plays at home against the Heat next weekend and on the road against the WolfPack on Feb. 7 and Feb. 8.
