On a tear in January with wins in five of its past six matches, the University of Regina's women's volleyball team is back at home this weekend against Thompson Rivers on Friday and Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Match time is set for 6 p.m. on Friday and 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Depending on the out-of-town scoreboard this weekend, the Cougars (8-10) could possibly clinch a postseason berth with two wins over the WolfPack. The U of R enters Friday tied with Saskatchewan for seventh place in the Canada West standings, but the Huskies visit No. 1-ranked UBC this weekend and the Cougars have given themselves a nice cushion in the first tiebreaker – sets won/sets lost differential.
Fifth-year outside hitter
Desiree Ates is closing in on a major University of Regina record, as she needs just eight kills to surpass Tammy Julé's single-season mark of 282 set back during the 2006-07 season. Ates leads the entire CIS with 275 kills this season, one ahead of UBC's Lisa Barclay with four matches left on the conference schedule.
And Ates isn't the only U of R player enjoying a stellar offensive season.
Michelle Sweeting has 211 kills and ranks third in Canada West with a career-high .321 hitting percentage while also leading the Cougars in service aces (27) and blocks (68).
Tori Glynn and
Chelsea Ziolkowski have also chipped in with over 100 kills this season, while setter
Leah Shevkenek is second in the conference in assists per set (9.93) and
Molly Wade-Cummings ranks eighth in Canada West in hitting percentage (.274) and is second on the team with 58 blocks.
Ates, along with libero
Megan Semeniuk, will be honoured as part of Senior Night prior to Friday's match. Semeniuk has played all five years of her career at the U of R, while Ates started out her post-secondary at Pasco-Hernando Community College in Florida and played at the University of New Hampshire in 2011-12 before her two seasons with the U of R.
Thompson Rivers (0-18) comes in still searching for its first win of the Canada West schedule. The WolfPack field an extremely young roster, as third-year outside hitter Carly Nelson is the lone Thompson River player past her second season of CIS eligibility. Second-year setter Katie Woo's main options are Brianne Rauch and rookie Morgan Kolasa, with Rauch leading the team in both kills (123) and attacks (426) on the season.
Now guided by interim head coach Chad Grimm after a midseason coaching change, the WolfPack will finish out its 2013-14 season next weekend with two home games against Manitoba.
After this weekend, the Cougars will hit the road for two big matches at No. 6-ranked UBC Okanagan to close out the conference schedule.
NOTES: Regina and Thompson Rivers met twice this season in non-conference, with the Cougars winning in straight sets in both matches ... the Cougars are 13-3 (.813) against Thompson Rivers in the 16 Canada West matches they've played since TRU joined the conference prior to the 2005-06 season.
