The University of Regina Cougars opened up Friday's CIS Championship quarterfinal against No. 1-seeded UBC with a 25-22 win, but dropped the next three sets to lose 3-1 to the Thunderbirds at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
After kicking off the match with the Set 1 win, the Cougars led for most of the second set and had as much as a six-point advantage, but UBC came up with a late response that set the tone for the rest of the match. The Cougars led 21-17 until UBC coach Doug Reimer called a timeout, and the Thunderbirds took eight of the set's final 10 points to even the match at a set apiece with a 25-23 win.
UBC never trailed in the third and fourth sets, winning by a 25-12 margin in the third set and clinching the win with a 25-16 win in the fourth. The Thunderbirds will meet Laval on Saturday night in the semifinals, with the winner of that match to advance to Sunday's championship final.
Lisa Barclay had 20 kills for UBC in the win, a total which was not only the match high but was also the most of any player in the four Friday quarterfinals. Barclay also led all players with a .357 hitting percentage and added 13 digs and six blocks for the Thunderbirds. Rosie Schlagintweit and Juliana Kaufmanis both had eight kills, while Mariah Bruinsma had a match-high eight blocks and Kirsty Setterlund added 39 assists.
Desiree Ates led the Cougars in both kills and digs, collecting 14 of each for a double-double.
Michelle Sweeting added 12 kills and hit a team-high .250, while
Tori Glynn had six kills and 10 digs.
The Cougars will now prepare for their consolation semifinal match against McMaster on Saturday. The two teams are scheduled for a 3 p.m. start at the CKHS.
