Former University of Regina Rams receiver/kicker Jon Ryan was punting for the Seattle Seahawks in their 43-8 victory over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII on Sunday in East Rutherford, N.J.
With the Seahawks enjoying a convincing victory, Ryan was only called upon once to punt and registered a 45-yard boot in the third quarter. Ryan is also Seattle's holder on the placekicking unit, which was successful on two field goals and five extra points in the win.
Ryan becomes the first Saskatchewan-born player to compete in the game and the first CIS graduate to play in and win the Super Bowl. He was the fourth CIS product to play in the game, joining Israel Idonije (Chicago/Manitoba), Jean-Philippe Darche (Seattle/McGill), and Ken Clark (Los Angeles/Saint Mary's).
Ryan handled placekicking and punting duties in addition to playing receiver for the Rams from 2000 to 2003. He remains the school's all-time leader with an average of 42.6 yards per punt over his four seasons at the U of R and holds a CIS record that can never be broken – his 109-yard touchdown reception from Mark Anderson at Saskatchewan on Oct. 27, 2001 can't be topped on the 110-yard field. He ended up with 45 catches for 863 yards and five touchdowns in his CIS career and was a part of the team's 2000 Canada West championship and run to the Vanier Cup game.
After being selected by Winnipeg in the third round of the 2004 CFL Draft, Ryan played two seasons with the Blue Bombers before signing as a free agent with the Green Bay Packers in 2006. After two seasons with the Packers, Ryan signed with Seattle as a free agent in 2008 and just completed his sixth season with the Seahawks.
