Video WebcastLive StatsComing off a weekend road split at Alberta, the University of Regina's women's basketball team will look to close out the first half of the Canada West schedule this weekend with Friday and Saturday games against Winnipeg at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Â
The Cougars made it five wins in as many Canada West games last Friday with a 71-50 win over the Pandas, but never recovered from a 13-0 Alberta first-quarter run and suffered a 70-63 loss to the Pandas to drop to 5-1 on the season. The loss dropped the Cougars down one spot to No. 6 in this week's CIS Top Ten.
Â
Almost all of the rest of Canada West is off this weekend, with only three conference games scheduled – two right here at the CKHS, and Alberta will head south to square off with Calgary on Saturday in a battle of two 7-1 teams. The Cougars will go into the December break in third place in the Pioneer Division with two wins this weekend, in fourth place in the division with a split against Winnipeg, or in fifth place in the 11-team division with a Wesmen sweep.
Â
The Cougars have gone with the same starting lineup in all six games this year, except for one game when
Britton Belyk stepped in to make her first career start in place of an injured
Kehlsie Crone.
Charlotte Kot,
Alyssia Kajati,
Katie Polischuk, and
Sidney Dobner join Crone in the U of R's usual starting five, with Belyk and
Christina McCusker both averaging in excess of 15 minutes played per game off the bench for the Cougars. Now in her fourth season of CIS eligibility, Kot is off to a spectacular start for the Cougars. She's fourth in Canada West in points per game (17.2) and second in the conference with an average of 10.5 rebounds per game, and is on pace to become the first Cougar to average a double-double over the course of a season since Jackie Moore during the 1990-91 campaign.
Â
Winnipeg (1-5) is the only Canada West team this season to beat Calgary, topping the Dinos a month ago in their season opener on the road. But that remains Winnipeg's only win on the year, as the Wesmen have lost five consecutive games since that season-opening victory. Megan Noonan, Skylar Boulanger, and Lena Wenke are Winnipeg's top scorers, all averaging between 12.5 and 13 points per game.
Â
After this weekend, the Cougars will have a month-long break from Canada West play. They'll be back in action on Jan. 9 and Jan. 10 at home against Trinity Western.
