Video WebcastLive StatsWith a chance to finish the first half of the Canada West schedule anywhere from fourth to eighth in the Pioneer Division, the University of Regina's men's basketball team hosts Winnipeg this Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Both teams come into the weekend with 3-3 records. The Cougars have a pair of away wins over Brandon, a home split against division-leading Lethbridge, and two road losses at Alberta last weekend on their resume, while Winnipeg has lost twice to Calgary, split with Alberta on the road, and has two lopsided wins over Trinity Western.
Last weekend at Alberta, the Cougars lost by 19 on Friday before being edged 66-63 by the Golden Bears on Saturday in a game which the U of R had two attempts at three-pointers in the final 10 seconds that would have pushed the game to overtime. But neither fell, and the Cougars slipped back to .500 for the season and a three-way tie with Alberta and Winnipeg for sixth in the division.
While
Jonathan Tull continues to lead the Cougars in scoring, the team's best player over the past two weekends might just be guard
Aaron McGowan. He has yet to start a game this season, but in the last four games he's second on the team in both points and rebounds, has a team-leading 12 assists, and is shooting 47% from three-point range.
Jonathan Tull leads the Cougars in points per game (17.2), rebounds per game (6.5), and steals (18) this season, while
Brandon Tull and
Alex Igual are also averaging double figures in points per game with McGowan at 9.8.
Jonathan Tull,
Brandon Tull, Igual, and
Will Tallman have each started all six games this season, while
Travis Sylvestre stepped into the starting lineup last weekend for the first two times in Canada West play. McGowan and
Brian Ofori lead the Cougars in minutes off the bench, with
Stephen Shields and
Mike Malecha also playing key reserve roles for the U of R.
Winnipeg's leading scorer is second-year guard Denzel Lynch-Blair, who averages an even 15 points per game. The Wesmen are heavily reliant on the three ball, with their average of 27.7 attempts from downtown ranking second to only Saskatchewan in the 17-team Canada West conference.
After this weekend's games, the Cougars will have two consecutive weekends off before heading south for the Phoenix College Holiday Classic. They'll play Phoenix College, Hillcrest Academy, and Cochise College on consecutive days beginning on Dec. 28, and are expected to have University of Tennessee transfer Rawane Ndiaye in the lineup for those ones.
