Cougars start out season at Guy Vetrie Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

The University of Regina's men's basketball team started the season with three games at the Guy Vetrie Memorial Tournament hosted by the University of Victoria from Thursday to Saturday. The Cougars went 0-3 at the tournament with losses to Victoria, McMaster, and McGill.

Brandon Tull finished as the team's leading scorer with a three-game total of 35 points, while Stephen Shields averaged 8.7 points per game and led the Cougars with a total of 13 rebounds. Alex Igual scored 27 points in the team's three games for the Cougars, who will be back in action next weekend against Mount Royal, Calgary, and Windsor at the Calgary Cup.

Thursday – Victoria 76, Regina 67 [box]
The Cougars opened the tournament against host Victoria and led for most of the game until a late Victoria surge. The Vikes reeled off a 15-2 run that gave them a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter and they were able to hold off the Cougars for the win.

Tull led the Cougars with 15 points, while Brian Ofori scored 14 and added a team-high six rebounds. Matthew Augustine had 11 points, with Travis Sylvestre coming off the bench to score 10. Johneil Johnson was 4-for-4 in his Cougar debut and finished with eight points in 10 minutes played, but suffered an injury and missed the remainder of the weekend.

Grant Sitton and Wayne Tucker, Jr. both scored 15 points for Victoria in the win.

Friday – McMaster 75, Regina 61 [box]
Much like Thursday's game, the Cougars kept it close until a big second-half run by the opposition put some distance between the two teams. This time, it was McMaster scoring nine consecutive points in a span of two minutes in the third quarter that pushed a four-point Marauders lead into a 13-point advantage.

Shields came off the bench to lead the Cougars in points and tie Matthew Augustine for the team lead with five rebounds, while Igual also scored in double figures with 10 points.

Lazar Kojovic was a perfect 5-for-5 from three-point land for McMaster and led all players with 21 points, while Connor Gilmore had 15 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double.

Saturday – McGill 81, Regina 62 [box]
The U of R's third game of the weekend followed a similar script as the first two, as the Cougars were within six points of a strong McGill team early in the third quarter but a 13-3 run by the Redmen gave them a double-digit advantage that the Cougars never recovered from.

Shields had a strong game with 15 points and six rebounds in just 18 minutes played, while Tull and Igual both scored 12 points. Rookie forward Carter Millar came off the bench to collect five points and a team-leading eight rebounds, seven of which came on the defensive glass.

McGill's Dele Ogundokun had a game-high 25 points.
