Two of the three teams mired in a tie for fifth place in the Canada West standings battle this weekend in Regina, as the University of Regina's men's basketball team hosts the Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday night (8:00) and Saturday night (8:00) at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Â
The Cougars (4-2) return to the CKHS this weekend for the first time since splitting their Canada West-opening series against Victoria in early October. They've gone 3-1 since then, splitting again the following weekend at MacEwan before last weekend's two-game sweep over Trinity Western.
Â
It was basically the same weekend against Trinity Western as the women's team, but in reverse – the men's team won 107-74 on Friday night to set a program record for largest margin of victory in a road game, then had to erase a six-point deficit in the fourth quarter before hanging on for a 100-94 win on Saturday.
Â
Head coach
Steve Burrows has settled into a fairly consistent rotation with a starting lineup consisting of forwards
Brian Ofori and
Travis Sylvestre and guards
Alex Igual,
Aaron McGowan, and
Brandon Tull. Igual is averaging 15.3 points per game and shooting 45.9% from three-point range, while McGowan averages 13.2 points per contest and leads the team with 23 assists. Tull is also averaging in double figures in points per game (12.5) and is nearing a significant career milestone – the fourth-year guard needs just 76 more points for 1000 as a Cougar.
Â
Rookie guard
Johneil Johnson doesn't start for the Cougars, but has been brilliant off the bench. He scored a total of 38 points in the two games against TWU last weekend and now averages 12.2 points per game while also leading the team with 16 steals. The U of R has also relied on fifth-year forward
Stephen Shields and second-year guard
Samuel Hillis this season. Hillis only averaged 5.7 minutes per game last year, but has seen his playing time nearly triple in his second year with the program.
Â
Saskatchewan comes into the weekend with an identical 4-2 record to the Cougars. The Huskies have been just outside of the U Sports Top Ten for much of the season, as they lost their first Canada West game of the year to Fraser Valley but have won four of five since then – including two convincing wins in a home sweep over Brandon two weekends ago.
Â
The Huskies boast one of the top players in Canada West. Not only is Shane Osayande one of only three players in the conference to average at least 20 points per game, but the fourth-year forward is also Canada West's rebounding leader with an average of 12.3 per contest. Osayande already has four double-doubles this season and is also among the conference's leaders in free throw shooting.
Â
Jaylan Morgan, Chan De Ciman, and Alex Unruh also average in double figures in scoring for Saskatchewan, with Matt Forbes (9.8 points per game) just missing that list.
Â
The Cougars will participate in the Wesmen Classic in Winnipeg the week after Christmas before returning to the Canada West schedule on Jan. 6 and Jan. 7 on the road at UBC Okanagan.
