The University of Regina's men's basketball team opened up the 2019-20 season with a win and two losses at the Guy Vetrie Memorial Tournament in Victoria.
The Cougars started out the weekend with a nice 82-75 win on Friday night over the host Victoria Vikes.
Carter Millar led the U of R with 21 points, including three-pointers on back-to-back possessions late in the fourth quarter that broke a 70-70 deadlock.
Josiah Thomas and
Samuel Hillis also scored in double figures with 13 points and 11 points, respectively.
In their second game of the tournament, Regina matched up with two-time defending conference champion Calgary and gave the Dinos all they could handle before eventually being defeated by an 89-84 margin. The Cougars led late in the fourth, but only scored one field goal in the final four minutes and a 9-1 run down the stretch by the Dinos put them ahead for good. Millar again led Regina with 25 points including seven three-pointers.
The difficult schedule got no easier on Sunday as the Cougars faced a Carleton squad that's won U SPORTS championships in 14 of the past 17 seasons. The Ravens took control early and ended up with five different double-digit scorers in a 91-57 victory.
Brayden Kuski scored a team-high 12 points for Regina.
The Cougars will continue their non-conference schedule next weekend with three road games against OUA opponents. They'll meet Wilfrid Laurier on Thursday, McMaster on Friday, and York on Saturday.
