Treyah Paquette commits to U of R's soccer, basketball teams

4/19/2022 11:11:00 AM

University of Regina women's soccer head coach Astrid Baecker and women's basketball head coach Dave Taylor announced Tuesday that Treyah Paquette will join the programs as a multi-sport athlete beginning in the 2022-23 academic year.

Paquette, a basketball standout with Winnipeg's Glenlawn Collegiate and a soccer star with the Bonivital Soccer Club, will become the first female student-athlete in U of R history to compete in two team sports concurrently.

In basketball, Paquette became the first Grade 9 player in Glenlawn history to earn a spot on the varsity team. She attended Capital Courts Academy (Orleans, Ont.) during the 2019-20 and 2020-21 academic years, but is back at Glenlawn this year and playing for the Lions in her Grade 12 season. Paquette was a three-time member of Team Manitoba at the 15U level, earning second-team all-star honours at the 2019 15U National Championship in Victoria.

"We are very excited to welcome Treyah to the Cougar family," U of R women's basketball coach Dave Taylor said. "She has played at high levels in the OSBA and UAA summer circuit and we expect her to help us right away next year. Treyah is highly skilled and adds to our guard strength, and fits perfectly into the style we want to play. She is someone I've kept close tabs on since her Grade 9 season at Glenlawn and it's great to have received her commitment."

Paquette's soccer experience includes most recently with the Bonivital Soccer Club in Winnipeg. A midfielder, she also played with Valour FC's Elite Girls program and was a part of the Manitoba's Regional Excel Centre in her Grade 9 season.

"Treyah has already been a perfect fit into our team culture and we're so excited to bring her onto campus," Cougars soccer coach Astrid Baecker said. "She is a dynamic midfielder with a wide array of skills and a high upside, and I know she has the work ethic and personality to succeed on the pitch and in the classroom here."

NOTES: Only one other female student-athlete in University of Regina history is known to have competed in two different team sports, but not at the same time ... Stacey Snell spent her first three seasons of eligibility with the women's hockey team, then switched to soccer for the 2001 and 2002 seasons.
