Jackson Wingert led the University of Regina's men's golf varsity club team at the Canada West Championships on Monday and Tuesday at the Okanagan Golf Club's Bear Course in Kelowna, B.C.
COUGAR HIGHLIGHTS
- Wingert, competing in his second Canada West tournament, was the top Cougar finisher for the second consecutive season as he tied for 25th place out of the 48 golfers in the field. Wingert, who had an 8-over total of 152 during the two-round event, shot a 77 on Monday and followed that up with a 75 in the second round on Tuesday.
- Carter Bell shot an 80 on Monday, but then carded the best score of any of the five U of R golfers in the second round. He shot a 2-over 74 on Tuesday, including back-to-back birdies on 18 and 1, to finish two shots behind Wingert in a tie for 32nd place at +10.
- Reece Kuski finished in 38th place, shooting 79 on Monday and 78 on Tuesday to finish +13. Micah Tangjerd tied for 41st at +16, while Jacob Lipp finished +24 to place 46th at the two-day tournament.
TEAM STANDINGS
Tournament host UBC Okanagan finished 24-under-par as a team and ran away with the team title on the men's side. UBC and Victoria rounded out the top three, while the Cougars placed eighth as a team.
ABOUT COUGAR GOLF
- Golf is one of two varsity club sports at the University of Regina (along with curling) that will compete at the Canada West level this season. The U of R's golf team began competing at the Canada West Championships in 2022.
- The Cougars have partnered with The Wascana Country Club as their home course. The Wascana's head golf professional, Todd Zado, is the head coach of the U of R's golf program.
