Alberta completes weekend sweep with win over Cougars

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team was topped in three sets by the No. 7-ranked Alberta Pandas on Saturday night in Edmonton.

The Pandas opened up the match with a 25-18 win in the first set, then matched that with a 25-18 victory in the second set despite the Cougars holding an early five-point lead.

The Cougars opened the third set in a big way, reeling off seven consecutive points with Tiffany Herman serving. Alberta scored six unanswered points of its own to get back in the set, and the Pandas took control with another 12-1 run that gave them a commanding 22-15 lead before going on to clinch the match with a 25-19 win.

Krista Zubick led Alberta (6-4) in kills for the second consecutive night, putting down nine and adding seven digs. Erin Walsh had 12 digs for the Pandas, while Jaki Ellis led Alberta in both assists (18) and blocks (5).

Roxanne Olynyk had nine kills and 11 digs for Regina (3-7), while Herman had 26 assists and 11 digs and Rebecca Rink led all players with 13 digs.

The Cougars return to action next weekend with a pair of pivotal home matches against Winnipeg (3-7). Regina and the Wesmen enter the weekend tied in the Canada West standings for the seventh and final conference playoff spot.
