The University of Regina's women's volleyball team took the first set from No. 4 Winnipeg, but fell in four to the Wesmen on Saturday night in Winnipeg.
The Cougars trailed by as many as five points in the early going of the first set, but went on a big 12-5 run around the media timeout to take the lead. After the two teams tied at 25, a kill by
Chelsea Ziolkowski and an attack error by Winnipeg gave the Cougars a 27-25 victory.
The second set was a reverse of the first, as it was Regina that jumped out to an early 8-2 lead before Winnipeg went on a run and ended up with a narrow 25-23 win. The Wesmen scored a 25-21 lead in the third set and clinch the match with a 25-22 win a hard-fought fourth set that featured 16 tie scores and eight lead changes.
Winnipeg's Ozana Nikolic and Carleen Kruschel both tied for the match lead with 14 kills, with Nikolic adding 10 digs for a double-double. Brittany Habing had 38 assists and nine digs, while Ellina Domnidou and Tesca Andrew-Wasylik both had 16 digs.
Fifth-year libero
Rebecca Rink (pictured) had a match-high 20 digs for the Cougars, while
Michelle Sweeting had 12 kills, a .500 hitting percentage, and led all players with seven total blocks.
Meagan Onstad and
Chelsea Ziolkowski both had double-doubles for Regina, with Onstad recording 12 kills and 12 digs and Ziolkowski ending up with 10 kills and 12 digs.
The Cougars (2-10) will have over a month off before returning to the court at home against Manitoba on Jan. 13 and Jan. 14.
