Women’s volleyball looks to nail down Canada West playoff berth

2/10/2011 10:57:57 AM

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team needs wins this weekend – and a bit of help on the out-of-town scoreboard – in order to clinch its ninth consecutive Canada West postseason berth.

The Cougars and Winnipeg enter the weekend tied for seventh in the conference with identical 6-10 records, but the first tiebreaker is sets won/lost differential. Winnipeg has won 26 sets this year and lost 37 for a -11 differential, while Regina is 22-34 for a -12 differential.

To clinch a playoff spot, the Cougars need to win more matches over Saskatchewan (2-14) this weekend than Winnipeg wins over Brandon (9-7). If both Regina and Winnipeg win the same amount of matches, then the Cougars will have to surpass Winnipeg in sets won/lost differential to grab the last postseason berth.

The Cougars, who are coming off of two losses to No. 1-ranked UBC, are led by fourth-year setter Tiffany Herman. Herman, who had her 2000th career assist two weekends ago against Brandon, enters the weekend third in Canada West with an average of 9.84 assists per set. Meagan Onstad ranks fifth in the conference with an average of 2.96 kills per set, while Rebecca Rink's average of 3.13 digs per set is seventh in the loop.

Saskatchewan's Candace Hueser ranks third in Canada West with 203 kills this season, while Katie Graves is second in the conference with 236 digs. Graves is also second on the team with 154 kills, while Erin Foster and Quinn Schulzke have mostly split the setting duties for the Huskies this season.

The two teams met once during the non-conference schedule, with the Huskies coming away with a 3-1 win back on Sept. 24 in Regina.

The Cougars and the Huskies will meet on Friday night at 6:15 p.m. and on Saturday night at 8 p.m. following the conclusion of the men's match.
