Box Score
The University of Regina's women's volleyball team suffered a four-set loss to the Winnipeg Wesmen on Friday night in Canada West action at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The first set was Winnipeg's from start to finish, as the Wesmen had just one hitting error, hit .500 as a team, and put together eight consecutive points around the media timeout en route to a 25-14 win. The second set was more contested, as the teams had 12 tie scores and six lead changes before the Cougars put together seven straight points of their own and cruised to a 25-19 win to even the match at one set apiece.
The two teams were never separated by more than two points until after the media timeout, when four straight points gave the Wesmen a 23-17 advantage. The Cougars (1-6) then reeled off six of the next seven points to get to within one point, but – in what would be a common theme of the match for the U of R – a service error gave Winnipeg a 25-23 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
In the fourth set, Winnipeg (1-5) pulled away with an 8-2 run leading up to the media timeout and clinched its first Canada West victory of the season with a 25-18 win.
Ozana Nikolic and Carleen Kruschel each had 11 digs as the pair combined for 32 of Winnipeg's 41 kills in the win. Nikolic led all players with 20 kills and hit .378 for the match, while Kruschel collected 11 kills. First-year setter Hope Schneider had 23 assists for Winnipeg.
Desiree Ates and
Michelle Sweeting both had fine offensive games for the Cougars, as Ates had 16 kills and a .351 hitting percentage while Sweeting matched her with 16 kills and had a match-leading .464 hitting percentage.
Meagan Lane dished out 43 assists, while Ates added 10 digs to score the U of R's lone double-double.
The Cougars had a 53-41 advantage in kills during the match, but struggled at the line with a total of 21 service errors in the loss.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night following the conclusion of the men's match. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
