Live WebcastLive StatsThe University of Regina's women's volleyball team is back at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport this weekend with a pair of matches against No. 3-ranked UBC Okanagan on the docket.
After playing afternoon matches last time they played at the CKHS two weekends ago, it's back to a normal home schedule for the Cougars. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday and 5 p.m. on Saturday.
The Cougars are coming off a pair of four-set road losses to Calgary last Friday and Saturday, which dropped their Canada West record to 3-7 for the season. They're now in a three-way tie for 10th place in the conference standings and with only seven teams moving on to the postseason from the 13-team league, the Cougars will likely need to get to the .500 mark to have a chance at the playoffs.
And that starts this weekend with an opportunity to play No. 3 UBC Okanagan, which moved up three spots in this week's CIS Top Ten after a couple wins over Saskatchewan.
The Cougars are led by fifth-year middle
Michelle Sweeting, who ranks third in Canada West with 3.47 kills per set and fifth in the conference with a .278 hitting percentage. Sweeting has missed a pair of matches this year to injury, but is just one kill behind
Tori Glynn's team-leading total of 112. Glynn is also second on the team with 108 digs, while
Chelsea Ziolkowski has 97 kills and a team-high 111 digs on the season. Second-year setter
Leah Shevkenek's average of 9.02 assists per set is third in Canada West, while
Molly Wade-Cummings leads the team with a total of 51 blocks and full-time libero
Lindsay Braul has 102 digs on the season.
The final spot in the rotation has floated between
Jenna Krahn and rookies
Kyla Payette and
Kristine Ward. Ward got the start in both matches last weekend against Calgary, but Payette came on for Ward in the second set last Saturday and stayed at left side for the remainder of the match. Krahn started the first six matches of the conference schedule, but hasn't played since the Thompson Rivers series early in November.
Back up to the No. 3 spot in the CIS Top Ten for the first time since Week 3, UBC Okanagan comes in riding a four-match winning streak as its home sweep over Saskatchewan last weekend followed two wins at Winnipeg on Nov. 7 and Nov. 8.
UBC Okanagan has a pair of potent offensive weapons at its disposal including fourth-year middle Katie Wuttunee, who leads Canada West with a .349 hitting percentage. Also among the conference statistical leaders is Brianna Beamish, as the fourth-year outside hitter ranks fifth in Canada West in kills (138) and kills per set (3.29). Also a fourth-year player, libero Kailin Jones' total of 153 digs is fourth in the conference.
The Heat's starting lineup is also likely to include fourth-year middle Katy Klomps, third-year outside hitter Megan Festival, either Emily Oxland or Chandler Proch at setter, and one of Michelle Jakszuk or Kaitlynn Given at outside hitter.
NOTES: The Cougars have had the edge in the all-time series since UBC Okanagan joined Canada West prior to the 2011-12 season, winning four of six matches over the Heat.
