The University of Regina's women's volleyball team won in three straight sets over McMaster in a CIS Championship consolation semifinal on Saturday afternoon at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The win gives the Cougars a berth in the consolation final on Sunday. They'll take on Canada West rival Trinity Western starting at 1 p.m. with the winner to place fifth in the eight-team tournament.
The Cougars got off to a bit of a slow start on Saturday, as McMaster jumped out to an early 9-4 lead. But the U of R took control of the set with an 11-1 run that turned a five-point deficit into a five-point advantage after the technical timeout. The Cougars went on to a 25-18 win in the first, then won 25-20 in the second and clinched the match with a 25-15 win in Set 3.
Regina's
Desiree Ates led all players with 16 kills and added 11 digs for a double-double, but it
Chelsea Ziolkowski finished with a match-high .474 hitting percentage after collecting 10 kills and just one error on 19 attacks. Libero
Megan Semeniuk had a match-high 12 digs with
Tori Glynn just behind with 11.
Leah Shevkenek added 36 assists and eight digs for the Cougars in the win.
Sophie Bukovic led McMaster in kills (5), digs (11), and blocks (4).
