Jaycee Magwood's big week continued, as the first-year forward was named the Canada West women's hockey Rookie of the Year on Wednesday.
Just two days after receiving second-team all-star and all-rookie honours, the Killarney, Man. product was recognized as the conference's top rookie.
"We were very impressed with Jaycee's rookie season, but we weren't surprised," head coach
Sarah Hodges said. "We knew what we were getting as a player, and her transition to the CIS level was seamless."
Magwood led Canada West first-year players in scoring by a wide margin, as her 26 points in 28 games were 10 points more than the second-highest scoring rookie. Magwood started off her Canada West career in style, notching a goal and an assist in her first game before adding two helpers on the following day. Her 11 goals and 15 assists were good for fourth overall in the conference scoring race and second in the CIS amongst rookies, behind only Melodie Bouchard of Ottawa who had 32 points.
"I expect her to keep growing as a player, she's a very hard worker and will be demanding of herself to improve her game," Hodges added. "Obviously she was a big part of our success this season and she'll definitely help build the program moving forward."
Along with Magwood, Hodges was also recognized by the conference, being named Canada West Coach of the Year.
Hodges, in her 18th season as the Cougars bench boss, guided the team to a 12-10-5-1 (W-L-OTW-OTL) record. The Cougars finished third in the conference a year after snagging the sixth and final Canada West playoff spot.
During her time with the Cougars, Hodges has led her team to one Canada West title (2001) and three national championship appearances (2001, 2002, 2003).
"I am so pleased Sarah has been recognized as the Canada West Coach of the Year. She works incredibly hard in all aspects of the job and is so deserving of this recognition," acting Athletic Director
Curtis Atkinson said. "Sarah devotes countless hours to putting her student-athletes in the best position to be successful. All of her hard work is shown in the success they have achieved on the ice, in the classroom, and in the community. Sarah always puts her athletes and the program first, and it is wonderful to see her recognized for her commitment to excellence."
Both Magwood and Hodges will represent Canada West as nominees for their respective awards at the CIS level.
