The University of Regina's men's basketball team kicked off the 2017-18 season with a non-conference tournament at Concordia University in Montreal, going 1-2 in three games against opposition from each of the other three U SPORTS conferences.
Â
The Cougars started out the weekend with a 92-74 loss to tournament host Concordia on Friday, but responded with a huge 101-42 victory over York the following day. Regina closed out the weekend on Sunday with a 98-85 loss to Dalhousie.
Â
Fifth-year guard
Alex Igual was named a tournament all-star for the Cougars after shooting 59% from three-point land and piling up 44 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, and five steals over the three games.
Â
"It was nice for our guys to compete against someone else this weekend," Cougars head coach
Steve Burrows said. "Like most other teams at this point of the year, we're trying to figure out our strengths and weaknesses. We saw some things we liked, and obviously some things we'll look to improve on moving forward."
Â
The Cougars were without
Brandon Tull and
Kornel Tokolyi for all three games, as both players are recovering from injuries sustained in the offseason. Regina is right back in action next weekend at the Naismith Classic hosted by the University of Waterloo. The Cougars will play Ottawa, Wilfrid Laurier, and the host Warriors.
Â
Friday – Concordia 92, Cougars 74 [
box]
The Cougars made it a one-possession game at one point early in the third quarter, but Concordia took control by outscoring Regina by a 29-18 margin in the quarter. That gave the Stingers a 19-point lead heading into the fourth, and they never trailed by fewer than 15 points down the stretch.
Â
Playing in his first game in a U of R uniform,
Shawn Lathan led the Cougars and tied for the game high with 17 points. Igual was a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range and finished with 16 points, while
Brian Ofori scored 13 and rookie
Nigel Warden came off the bench to score 11 in just 14 minutes on the floor.
Â
Concordia's Jonathan Koud matched Lathan with a 17-point performance.
Â
Saturday – Cougars 101, York 42 [
box]
The Cougars opened the game on a 13-2 run and never looked back, shooting 49% from three-point range and holding York to 1-of-28 shooting from beyond the arc in the lopsided victory. Regina erupted for 40 points in the fourth quarter alone, thanks in large part to
Brayden Kuski's five triples in the game's final period.
Â
Shaquille Harris and Lathan both had big double-doubles for the Cougars. Harris, a transfer from Williston State, had 19 points and 12 rebounds while Lathan scored 16 points and led all players with 16 rebounds. Kuski finished with 17 points, while Igual scored 15 and
Samuel Hillis chipped in with 10.
Â
Brandon Ramirez led York with seven points.
Â
Sunday – Dalhousie 98, Cougars 85 [
box]
Points scored off turnovers proved to be the difference in Dalhousie's win, with the Tigers scoring 27 points off Regina's 23 turnovers compared to 12 points for the Cougars off 13 Dalhousie miscues. It was a five-point game heading into the fourth quarter, but seven straight points for the Tigers in a two-minute span midway through the period proved too much for the Cougars to overcome.
Â
Samuel Hillis came off the bench to lead the Cougars with 18 points. Harris added 15 points for Regina, while Igual, Kuski, and
Johneil Johnson all scored 13 points for the U of R. Igual also had a game-high eight rebounds for the Cougars.
Â
Dalhousie's Sven Stammberger was 12-for-17 from the field, 3-for-4 from three-point range, and filled the stat sheet with 31 points, six rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
