Fresh off their first conference win of the season, the University of Regina Cougars host the Alberta Pandas in Canada West women's volleyball matches on both Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Â
The Cougars (1-3) lost to Winnipeg on Friday to open up last weekend's series, but recovered for a four-set win over the Wesmen on Saturday thanks in large part to a balanced offence that had four players with at least 11 kills. Rookie Jessica Lerminiaux led the way with 13, with
Diana Lumbala chipping in with 12 and both Brooklyn Reynolds and
Ashlee Sandiford ending up with 11.
Â
Lerminiaux (Campbell Collegiate) and Reynolds (UBC Okanagan) have been impact players so far for the Cougars in their first seasons in the program. A massive re-addition to the team has been Satomi Togawa, who missed all of last season due to injury but has reclaimed her position as the team's primary setter. Regina's starting lineup so far has also included Lumbala at right side,
Taylor Ungar at libero, Lerminiaux and Sandiford at left side, and Reynolds and
Kathleen Ens at middle.
Â
Also playing a key role off the bench for the Cougars is third-year player
Haley Wagar, who's been utilized often as a late-set substitute by head coach
Melanie Sanford.
Â
The Cougars will face an Alberta team that enters the series as the top-ranked team in the country. The Pandas took two wins over crosstown rival MacEwan last weekend, but the Griffins didn't make it easy on them – Alberta won the final two sets by scores of 26-24 and 25-23 in a straight-sets victory on Saturday, then had to pull out a fifth-set victory over MacEwan on Sunday to complete the weekend sweep and move to 2-0 on the season.
Â
Alberta, the reigning Canada West champion, lost the U SPORTS Player of the Year Meg Casault in addition to Canada West all-stars Kacey Otto and Mariah Walsh from last year's roster. But the Pandas have added a key transfer to the lineup, with Kory White returning to play for her hometown school after spending her first season out of high school with Seattle University (NCAA Div. I). White was, by far, the most heavily used player by Alberta last weekend and ranks among Canada West's leaders with an average of 3.63 kills per set.
Â
Regina and Alberta will play on Friday night (6:00) and Saturday night (7:00) at the CKHS.
