The Alberta Pandas went a perfect 5-0 to finish in first place at the University of Regina Invitational over the weekend at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport while the host Cougars finished in fourth with a 2-3 record at the six-team non-conference tournament.
 
Alberta – the defending Canada West champion – dropped only two sets the entire weekend, recording four-set wins over Saskatchewan and Manitoba and straight-set victories over Regina, Winnipeg, and Brandon.
 
The Cougars started out the weekend on Friday afternoon with a four-set win over Winnipeg, scoring 25-22 and 25-21 wins in the first two sets before edging the Wesmen by a 28-26 score in the fourth. They were swept by Alberta in the Friday night session, but took a nice four-set win over Brandon on Sautrday afternoon with 25-19, 25-19, and 25-23 wins after dropping the opening set to the Bobcats.
 
Regina had a chance to improve to 3-1 after going up two sets to one against Manitoba on Saturday night, but the Bisons claimed 25-15 and 15-10 wins in the fourth and fifth to come away with the win. The Cougars finished off the tournament with a three-set loss to Saskatchewan on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Cougars will continue non-conference action next weekend at the Unruh Realty Invitational hosted by the University of Winnipeg. They'll meet Brock, Winnipeg, and MacEwan in pool play on Friday and Saturday before the playoff round begins on Saturday night.
