The University of Regina's women's volleyball team won its final three matches at the Unruh Realty Invitational to take first place at the four-team non-conference tournament hosted by the University of Winnipeg.
The Cougars finished off the tournament with a four-set win over Brandon. The two teams split the opening two sets, but the Cougars replied with 25-21 and 25-18 wins in the third and the fourth to seal the victory. Third-year setter
Satomi Togawa was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player following the final match.
Regina compiled a 2-1 record in the round robin portion of the tournament, opening with a hard-fought five-set win over Brandon and a three-set loss to host Winnipeg on Friday. The Cougars rebounded with a three-set win of their own over Moncton, then got a measure of revenge with a straight-sets victory over the Wesmen on Saturday in the tournament semifinals.
The Cougars now have a 6-4 record in their 10 non-conference matches. They'll have two more tune-ups next weekend against Saskatchewan in a pair of matches hosted by Ochapowace First Nation, then will square off with Trinity Western on Oct. 19 and Oct. 20 in Langley, B.C. to open Canada West play.
NOTES: Caleb Eschbach served as the team's acting head coach at the tournament with
Melanie Sanford in Japan serving as the technical delegate for the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship.
