No. 8 Cougars back in action against WolfPack

11/18/2010 1:36:29 PM

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team finishes its four-match homestand this against the Thompson Rivers WolfPack at the CKHS on Friday and Saturday.

The teams will meet on Friday night at 6:15 p.m. and on Saturday night at 8 p.m. following the conclusion of the men's match.

The Cougars (1-3) played then-No. 4 Trinity Western tough last weekend, but the undefeated Spartans came through with a four-set victory on Friday and a five-set win on Saturday. Despite the pair of losses, the Cougars jumped up one spot in this week's poll. They moved up to No. 8, leapfrogging Calgary after the Dinos suffered a road setback to Saskatchewan last weekend.

The U of R's offence is controlled by fourth-year setter Tiffany Herman, who leads Canada West with an average of 10.47 assists per set. Roxanne Olynyk leads the Cougars with 50 kills this season, while Meagan Onstad and Kaitlyn Hughes are tied for second on the team with 46. First-year middle Michelle Sweeting has a team-high .225 hitting percentage and is second on the Cougars with eight blocks.

Defensively, Solveig Nilson has a team-high 11 total blocks while Onstad and Hughes are tied for the team lead with 46 digs.

Thompson Rivers (0-4) enters the weekend searching for its first win of the Canada West schedule, as the WolfPack have been swept by both Trinity Western and Manitoba to start the season.

Fourth-year outside hitter Kelly Asleson has been the WolfPack's offensive leader, recording a team-high 36 kills and ranking fifth in the conference with a .324 hitting percentage. Second-year libero Denai Wouters leads Thompson Rivers with 32 digs, while rookie setter Kara Twomey has 102 assists through the team's first four matches.

This weekend will mark just the second time that Thompson Rivers has travelled to Regina since the WolfPack joined the conference prior to the 2005-06 season. The two teams played twice in Regina in December of 2007 but have met in Kamloops in the eight other meetings between the two teams. The Cougars hold a 9-1 advantage in the all-time series.

Thompson Rivers will host the Alberta Pandas next weekend, while the Cougars will hit the road for a pair of matches at Calgary.

NOTES: Nilson has 150 career blocks and needs just three more to pass Karolyn Mus for third on the U of R's career rally-point era list … Nilson also needs just three more service aces to pass Jennifer Prokopetz for second on the school's career list.
