Ticket Information
This weekend marks the first home matches of the year for the University of Regina's women's volleyball team, which hosts the Calgary Dinos on campus at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Friday's match gets going at 6:00 p.m. and first serve for Saturday night is scheduled for 5:00. Tickets are available at the door or online at
www.cougartickets.com.
The Cougars (0-4) aren't off to the start they were looking for as hosts of the 2013 CIS Championship, as they started the conference schedule with two losses to Brandon and also lost a pair of matches to the University of Winnipeg last weekend. Two of the team's four losses this year have gone the full five sets, as the Cougars went five with the Bobcats to open Canada West play on Oct. 25 and had a 2-1 lead last Friday at Winnipeg before losing the fourth and fifth sets to the Wesmen.
The most significant change for the Cougars this season is at setter, with rookie
Leah Shevkenek taking control of the U of R offence and ranking fourth in the conference with an average of 9.24 assists per set. Shevkenek's main options are fifth-year outside hitter
Desiree Ates and fourth-year middle
Michelle Sweeting, as Ates leads the team with 60 kills and Sweeting has 50 kills while leading Canada West outright with a blistering .433 hitting percentage.
In her first season as a starter and her second with the Cougars, middle
Molly Wade-Cummings is hitting an efficient .319 and ranks second on the team behind Sweeting with a total of 10 blocks.
Tori Glynn has 26 kills and a team-leading 40 digs on the year, with libero
Megan Semeniuk just behind with 38 digs.
Calgary isn't ranked, but received only three voting points less than No. 10 McGill in this week's CIS Top Ten poll. The Dinos (3-1) opened the Canada West schedule with a split against Mount Royal two weekends ago and are coming off a weekend road sweep over Thompson Rivers which saw Calgary win all six sets in convincing fashion.
Fourth-year setter Jordhynn Guy leads a Calgary offence that comes into the weekend ranked fourth in Canada West with a .200 hitting percentage. Guy averages 8.54 assists per set and second-year hitter Ali Woolley has been her top target on the outside, as Woolley has a team-high 53 kills on the season and a .265 hitting percentage.
Emma Pedersen is second on the team with 31 kills and leads the Dinos with a .319 hitting percentage, while Maura Hayes and Janna Ogle also figure prominently in the offence.
Both matches will be broadcast live from the CKHS at
