Campbell wins CIS gold in 60-metre dash

Full Results

The University of Regina's Tevaughn Campbell collected a gold medal in the 60-metre dash on Thursday on Day 1 of the CIS Championships hosted by York University.

Campbell finished in a time of 6.67 seconds to break his own school record of 6.75, which he set two weekends ago at the Canada West Championships. Campbell held off York's Bismark Boateng for the win, who finished in second place with a time of 6.74 seconds. That's a reverse from last year's final, which saw Boateng win gold with Campbell earning silver.

"Once the gun went off, the race was his," Cougars interim head coach Wade Huber said. "He was incredible out of the blocks, and it was an extremely fun race to watch."

Campbell's time puts him eighth place on the CIS Championships all-time performance list.

Kahlen Branning also qualified for the finals in the 60 and finished in fifth place with a season-best time of 6.87 seconds. Branning earned four team points for his fifth-place effort, with Campbell's gold adding 10 points for an early total of 14. That puts the Cougars in first place in the overall standings through Day 1, though the 60 was the only event scored on the first day of the three-day meet.

On the women's side, Joy Becker entered the weekend ranked 12th in the nation in the 60-metre dash but qualified for the finals and finished in sixth place with a season-best time of 7.62 seconds. Competing in her first CIS Championships, rookie Reagan Fedak was 10th in the weight throw after a toss of 14.66 metres on her third attempt.

The Cougars will have four athletes in action on Day 2 during Friday's session - Ahmed Alkabary (long jump), Becker (long jump), Branning (300-metre dash), and Greg Hetterley (1000-metre run).
