Box Score 3 The University of Regina's men's basketball team started out the Naismith Classic with a pair of losses, but finished out the non-conference tournament with a nice 93-75 win over tournament host Waterloo on Saturday night.
The Cougars started out the tournament with a close Friday loss to Ottawa before falling to Wilfrid Laurier on Saturday. Regina, which now has a 2-4 record in six non-conference games, will travel to Kamloops, B.C. next weekend to play Thompson Rivers and UBC Okanagan in the WolfPack Invitational.
Thursday – Ottawa 83, Cougars 78 [

The Cougars made a valiant effort at a late comeback, but ultimately weren't able to overcome Ottawa's hot start that saw the Gee Gees score the first 11 points of the game and 16 of the first 18. Ottawa led the entire game and took a 14-point lead into the fourth, but a big 14-4 run by the Cougars capped by a
Shawn Lathan triple made it a one-possession game with 26 seconds to go. But good free throw shooting sealed the win for Ottawa, with Sean Stoqua hitting all four attempts from the stripe in the final 20 seconds.
Brian Ofori and
Shaquille Harris both scored 17 points for the Cougars, while
Johneil Johnson had 13 and both
Alex Igual and Lathan finished with 11 points. Johnson added nine rebounds to fall just short of a double-double.
Stoqua led Ottawa with a game-high 21 points.
Friday – Wilfrid Laurier 93, Cougars 75 [

The Cougars led after the opening quarter and trailed by just three at halftime, but Laurier seized control of the game after outscoring the U of R by a 28-16 margin in the third. The Golden Hawks went on separate 8-0 and 16-4 runs in that quarter, giving them a 15-point lead heading into the fourth which the Cougars were never able to cut into.
Samuel Hillis had a game-high 19 points and added eight rebounds for the Cougars, while Lathan scored 16 points and
Brian Ofori registered 11 points and a team-leading nine rebounds. Johnson added 10 points and four steals for the U of R.
Six players broke into double figures for Waterloo, led by 16 points by both Nicholas Broady and Ali Sow.
Saturday – Waterloo 93, Cougars 75 [

This time it was the Cougars jumping out to a quick start, scoring nine straight points to take a 14-4 lead only to have Waterloo storm back to grab a 23-21 lead after the first. But the Cougars went on an 8-0 run before halftime and led the rest of the way, using an 18-5 run in the third to take complete control of the contest.
Lathan and
Samuel Hillis again led the Cougars offensively. Lathan scored 21 points and added seven rebounds, while Hillis hit five of his seven three-point attempts and finished with 19 points while also pulling down eight boards. Johnson had 14 points, eight rebounds, and six assists for the U of R while both Igual and Ofori had 12 points.
Nedim Hodzic had a big double-double for Waterloo, leading all players in both points (20) and rebounds (13).
