The 1979-80 edition of the men’s hockey team was the first team to be inducted into the University of Regina Sports Hall of Fame. Led by head coach Reg Higgs and sniper Mark Piller, the Cougars won their third consecutive Great Plains Athletic Conference championship. The team defeated Moncton and Guelph to advance to the CIAU final game, where the Cougars finally lost to Alberta to end their postseason run.

Other players included Mark Albert, Mitch Bozak, Barry Clarke, Brent Dark, Larry Ell, Greg Fieger, Doug Folk, Gerry Galloway, Don Henry, Dwayne Hinger, Mike Hogan, Glenn Ing, Greg Ing, Billy Kyle, Bob Leslie, Eric Lockwood, Kevin Nagel, Mark Piller, Georges Robitaille, Gord Sandberg, Larry Segall, Bill Sherven, Jim Thompson, and Tim Wicijowski. Rick Seitz was an assistant coach, while Pierre Trudel was the team’s manager.
