Sam Stewart spent 40 years with the University of Regina, including 23 as head coach of the men’s and women’s basketball teams from 1940 to 1963. Stewart originated the Cougar nickname in 1945 and started the U of R’s first intercollegiate series with American schools, setting up several games against Montana-based schools. Besides his head coaching duties, Stewart was a professor and an assistant dean at the U of R and was a prominent referee in the Regina basketball community.
