Reg Higgs was the first coach of the University of Regina’s men’s hockey team and took the Cougars to national prominence in short order, as the team won four Great Plains Athletic Conference championships in his first five years behind the bench. Under Higgs, the team’s best finish was in 1980, when the Cougars finished in second place at the CIAU Championship. He was named the CIAU Coach of the Year in 1982 after leading the team to a 21-3 record and a GPAC title With the exception of the 1980-81 season, Higgs coached from 1976 to 1985 before leaving the U of R to become an assistant coach with the New York Rangers.
