Dick White retired as the University's director of athletics in 2014 after 20 years in that position and 34 years at the school overall. He started his involvement with Cougar Athletics in 1981 and worked as an administrative assistant and as an athletics coordinator until 1988 before taking over as director of athletics in 1995. Under his leadership, the U of R’s athletics department grew from six varsity teams to 16. White was instrumental in bringing CIS football to the U of R with a community partnership model that saw the junior Regina Rams join Canada West prior to the 1999 season. The school also added cross country, women’s hockey, women’s soccer, swimming, track & field, and women’s wrestling during his tenure. After assuming his role as director of athletics, White saw the U of R’s varsity teams combine for three national championships and 17 conference championships. He also served as president of Canadian Interuniversity Sport, in addition to stints as president for both the Great Plains and Canada West conferences. White is also a member of the Regina Sports Hall of Fame and the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame.
