Rod Houk made his U of R debut as an 18-year-old during the 1986-87 season, then played for the Regina Pats for two seasons before returning to the Cougars for the 1989-90 and 1990-91 seasons. During his final two seasons at the U of R, Houk was a two-time All-Canadian and a two-time Canada West first-team all-star and was named Canada West’s Outstanding Player in 1990. Following the 1990-91 season, he became the first winner of the Dr. Randy Gregg Award, given to the Canada West player who best demonstrates excellence in hockey, academic, and community service. Houk was drafted by the Minnesota North Stars in the 1990 Supplemental Draft and played professional hockey for two seasons after his career at the U of R.
