Christine Stapleton served as the head coach of the U of R’s women’s basketball team for nine years, beginning with the 1993-94 season and ending with the 2001-02 campaign. She inherited a Cougar team that had won a total of just five games in the previous two seasons, but quickly turned the program around. The Cougars won a national championship in 2001 under Stapleton’s guidance and collected Great Plains Athletic Conference titles in 1999, 2000, and 2001. She left the U of R as the school’s all-time leader in conference victories, collecting a 101-51 record over her nine seasons as head coach. She coached seven All-Canadians, one CIAU Player of the Year, and also won the Peter Ennis Award as the CIAU Coach of the Year in 1997.
